This Week...#3

Had a clear out: I have more clothes, shoes, handbags and jewellery than I know what to do with, so I decided that I would do a big spring clean of them. There were many items sent to the local charity shop and some were given to my mum. It felt good to de-clutter and free up some space.

Ordered new furniture: I know that this isn't that exciting, but when we moved into this apartment, it was supposed to be a stop gap. We've now been here almost three years so I figured that it was high time that I got some extra bits to make it homely. I'm really getting into home interiors, so this has been a nice little project for me.

Looked for jobs abroad: Some of you will know that I've just started a new job which I love, but working abroad is always something that I've wanted to do. I'm not fussed where in the world, but I just think that working somewhere warm and exotic would be so exciting.

Okay, so not the most exciting of posts but I do really enjoy looking back over my week and sharing it with you. I'm hoping to post a few makeup looks this week, so keep an eye for those.

VO5 Give Me Texture Spray

If like you me, you have extremely thick hair, then you will understand the struggle between having the patience to style it, and getting a style to look good. It is a constant struggle, and it's one that I reckon has cost me a fair amount of money over the years. I have purchased my fair share of styling products and tools, many of which have done nothing for me. With the trend for textured hair getting bigger and better, I wanted to try it but was sure that I wouldn't find anything that would work on my mane. Enter V05 Give Me Texture Spray.

I've been a big fan of their heat defence spray for a while but this lasts me such a long time, I rarely visit their stand. Whilst perusing the aisles of boots, I noticed that it was two styling products for £5 from VO5 so I had a little look. I picked up my usual heat defence and was a little stuck as to what else to buy. As I was tempted by the offer, I eventually settled on the Give Me Texture Spray. I figured that if it didn't work for me then all was not lost and I could pass it onto my mum or a friend. Well this little beauty will be staying with me.

After washing and blow drying my hair, I brush through and then spray this through the mid lengths and ends of my locks. A quick ruffle up with my fingers and I'm done. Beautiful undone bed hair that was ultra easy to use. My other favourite way to use this is after straightening my hair. Now this is something that I would rarely do before as it made my long hair look a little witch like, but now after a quick blast with this, it looks transformed. All my layers are visible but not obvious, and my hair has a considerable amount of volume.
Another thing that I must add is that his doesn't make my hair feel gritty or crunchy, something which I was worried about. This brushes out as easily as it was sprayed in and doesn't make my hair look or feel dry.

You can purchase this from Boots for £3.79

If you are after a texture spray, then I would definitely recommend this. What are your favourite texture sprays?

Big Hair, No Heat

We've all seen celebrities with big hair that looks as though it could only have been achieved by magic hands, the biggest of round brushes and an unimaginable amount of heat. Well , what if I told you that it can be done without the heat? I've been using this technique on my hair for years now and always have people asking where I got my hair done when I've done this. So, I thought I would share it with you so that you can have big hair too.

First of all, the only things you will need is a bunch of kirby grips. The more of these you have, the better. Then you will need a hairspray suited to your hair type and a comb or brush. If you wanted to, you could also use a texture spray to give a more relaxed look.
It's best to do this on day old hair, as it will have a better hold. However, if you are going to be doing this on freshly washed hair then it's best to let it air dry to about 80-90% dry. Make sure that you hair is brushed through, ensuring that any tangles are dealt with.
The next part is the fun bit. Take a section of hair from the top of your hair and wrap it around you fingers. I did take some picture of this but silly me deleted them so I will do my best to explain. Depending on how tight you want the hair to be, determines how many fingers to wrap the hair around. One finger for ringlets, Two for curls, Three for waves. I wrapped around Two fingers for the final look below. Pull the hair up at a 90 degree angle to the crown of your head and wrap away from the face. Once you have your hair section wrapped, take a kirby grip and secure it into place. Continue this all over your head until all of your hair is wrapped and in place. It takes a few practices to get used to it, but it will always look messy on your head as demonstrated by my oh so professional picture below.

I would recommend leaving this in for as long as possible. If I'm going out on a Saturday night then I like to do this in the morning when I wake up and leave it in until just before I go out. The longer you leave it in the better the overall results will be. When I first pin it in, I apply a quick and light mist of hairspray, just to hold it in through the day. Then, just before I take it out I apply another light mist and start unpinning. I start from the front, as that is where I applied the first pin, but it is entirely up to you where you start. When unpinning, these should be quite curly or wavy, and fall naturally. Some of them may need a little shaping, which can be done when all of the pins are undone. Once all of the grips are out, give your hair a shake and finish with hairspray.

Ta Dah! Big Bouncy hair that might just be red carpet ready! Not only is this incredibly easy to do, but it is really good for your hair as it uses zero heat, and very minimal product.
If you do this hairstyle, I'd love to see your results so feel free to leave your links below or tweet me @RetroLoveBeauty :)

This Week...#2

I have been a little bit quite on the blogging front over the past week. Truth be told, I wasn't really feeling it and didn't want to publish half hearted posts. Time has come around really quickly since my last (and first) "This Week" post, but I have to say I have been rather looking forward to writing this weeks, as I have had a very full on week.

Went back to my hometown: Travelling back to Leeds is always something that I look forward to, whether it be for a day or a week. Been a Leeds girl born and bred, I always feel so comfortable back there, and love seeing how the city is constantly changing.

Celebrated my Dads 50th Birthday: This was my reasoning for going back home, and we had some amazing celebrations. It was so lovely to spend some quality time with my parents and brother, and catching up with old friends.

Completed my training for my new job: This has been such a long time coming! I was offered the job in the January and have only just completed the training. It has been quite stressful and difficult at times, but it has all been worth it.

Got a haircut: This isn't the most exciting thing in the world but it is a big deal to me. The last time I went to a hair salon was October last year and my hair was desperate for a trim. Having really thick hair is such a pain, but now it feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

Discovered new beauty favourites: I had got myself into a bit of a beauty rut and was finding it hard to get out of it. When I was packing my makeup bag to go back to my mum and dads, I made sure that I put in items that were barely used or brand new as opposed to my everyday items. It ended up working really well and  have got some new favourite items.

I've really been enjoying writing these weekly summaries, even if I do ramble on a bit. What have you been getting up to this week?

On Wednesday, We Wear Pink

Okay, so that wasn't supposed to the title to this post, but when I realised that I was going to be posting it today and that it was pink related, it really couldn't have been anything else. Right?
Well, on Monday I was looking through my makeup collection, trying to switch up products in my bag ready for my weekend away and for the spring season. It dawned on me that I own a lot of pink makeup products, mainly lipsticks and glosses but there were other things thrown in there too. To be really honest, I'm not sure why I own them because I never wear them. I thought that I would grab a few products and attempt to make them work for me. I was pretty pleased with what I came up with and think that my pink products are going to get a lot more lovin'.

For my base, I used my newly purchased and much loved L'oreal Lumi Magique foundation in Rose Beige and MAC Studio Finish Concealer in NW20.
The eyes was where I was really worried about placing pink eyeshadow because it made me think of when I was about 12 and was in love with a very chalky and powdery eyeshadow that was the most ridiculous shade of hot pink. I used my Sephora Colour Pop-Up Makeup Store, which you can read about here. This is wonderful for any makeup look as it has all sorts of shades and finishes. You can use any other palette with pinks in, as I'm aware that you might not have this. If you wanted to purchase it, it is only available from the European Sephora website or on Ebay. I used two of the pink shades, one being more peachy and the other being a soft pink, I mixed the two and really softly applied them to the lid, so that there would be a hint of colour but nothing too much. I blended out with a neutral matte taupe and I finished with a highlight and mascara.
For my cheeks, I decided not to apply my usual bronzer as I wanted the blush to be solo. I applied MAC Fleur Power Blusher with a stippling brush to add a natural flush of colour to the apples of my cheeks.
Lips was where I knew I was going to struggle, because I had so many pinks to choose from. I ended up choosing Maybelline Colour Sensational lipstick in Fuchsia Flash. This is an extremely bright blue toned pink and it was a little much for the look I was going for. I decided to just dab it onto my lips and blend it out with my fingers to give it a toned down look.

So, that was my pink wearing post. I think I'm probably going to wear this look a little more often throughout Spring. What do you think to wearing pink?

The Life In Letters Tag

First of all, apologies that I haven't been blogging much this week, but I've just started a new job and have been pretty worn out this week.Who knew that starting a new job would tire me out so much?! Anyway, today's post is The Life In Letters Tag, which I've seen popping up on quite a few lovely blogs but for the life of me I can't find who ever created it. If it was you, feel free to let me know and I'll credit you :). I love tags like this as it allows for readers to get to know the person behind the post. Let's get started...

A is for Australia. Me and Olly are in the process of planning to go there for our Honeymoon. Olly has always wanted to go there and I've always wanted to travel, so it just seems like the perfect destination for us both.

B is for Blogging. This is pretty obvious but it really is a huge part of my life. I love doing it, I've met so many wonderful friends and it's the only hobby I've ever stuck to!

C is for Camping. Ok this one might be a bit of a let down because I actually hate camping and will never do it again my life. However, the first break that me and Olly went on together was a week camping in Scarborough, so I do feel a little sentimental about it.

D is for Dogs. I just love Dogs. I'm trying as hard as I can to persuade Olly to let me have a dog. I love going back to my mum and dads to see my little bundle of fluff.

E is for Elephants. My favourite animal ever and another part of our Honeymoon. Before Australia, we are hoping to visit Thailand and spend a day visiting an Elephant sanctuary to help look after them, something which I have always wanted to do.

F is for Friends. Both in the literal and TV show sense. I have some amazing friends that I could trust with my life and wouldn't be where I am without them. The TV show also happens to be one of my all time faves!

G is for George. My not so little brother. Despite there being an age gap of almost 6 years, he towers over me at nearly 6foot. He really is my best friend and I'm so proud of the young man he has become.

H is for Harry Potter. From the very first book I was a fan and I can remember being in awe when our Year 4 teacher read COS to us at story time.

I is for Indecisive. I am literally the worst person to come to when a decision needs to be made. I hate making them and always worry about making the wrong one.

J is for Jackson. The aforementioned bundle of fluff. My absolute pride and joy. I miss my little Shih Tzu so much since moving out, but going back to my parents I get plenty of cuddles from him.

K is for Katie. Need I say more?

L is for Leeds. My hometown. My most favourite place on Earth. I always feel so comfortable when I'm back home and love nothing more than hearing a good old Leeds accent.

M is for Makeup. The main reason for starting this blog. I just love it and obviously own far too much of it. That won't stop me buying anymore though!

N is for Novels. I could not manage with out a good few novels. I think nothing beats getting settled down, with some chocolate and a cup of tea, then losing myself in a good book.

O is for Oliver. At the risk of sounding soppy, I couldn't do a tag post about my life without including him in it. I still can't believe that we are engaged after spending 5 wonderful years together. I can't wait to become his wife.

P is for Planning. I have always been one to plan things. I hate just winging it as it makes me nervous and I like knowing what is going to happen.

Q is for Quotes. I love reading inspirational quotes and it's one of the ways I help my anxiety. When I was diagnosed at the age of 13 it was something that was suggested to me and I've never looked back. It has been such a help to me.

R is for Reality TV. I know, I know, it's some of the worst shows out there. However, it is definitely my guilty pleasure especially constructed ones such as TOWIE and MIC.

S is for Spanish. The most beautiful language in the world! From a really young age when I started to learn the language I knew that I was in love with. I was determined to become fluent, and I did that finally three years ago.

T is for Travel. This has always been a big part of my life. I love going to new places and experiencing different cultures. I love it so much, I chose to do my degree in Tourism Management.

U is for University. Hands down this was the most amazing experience of my life! If you're going to uni this, I am so utterly jealous of you. If you're thinking of going to uni then let me tell you it really is worth it, but feel free to ask me any questions if you wish :)

V is for Volver. I was struggling to know what to pick for this letter but then I remembered my favourite Spanish film. Volver is pretty good and even if you don't understand the language, it's worth watching with the subtitles on.

W is for World. I think that this planet is such a beautiful place and there are so many amazing things to see and do. It's my dream and my goal to travel the world one day.

X is for X-Rays. I've seen this answer on quite a few peoples versions of this, but I couldn't put anything else. I have had so many X-Rays over the years as a result of my respiratory condition, they are pretty much the norm to me now.

Y is for You. Without all of you, I would probably have given up with this blog a long time ago. I love interacting with you all on Twitter, and reading other blog posts from you lovely lot.

Z is for Zzzzzz. Who doesn't love sleep? My favourite feeling in the world is getting all snuggled up in bed on a night time. Nothing quite beats it.

Well, if you have lasted this long then you deserve a round of applause and a very strong cocktail! If you have completed this tag then I would love to see it so feel free to link it below. I Tag all of my lovely readers to do this tag also.

This Week...#1

I love reading posts finding out what people have been up to during the week or month. I never really thought about writing them myself and I'm not sure why. After a very busy week this week, I thought it would be nice to write something and fill you in. As I haven't been very good on the blog front this week too, I thought it would give me a chance to fill you all in. So, here is what I've been up to this week...

Started a new job: Finally!! After graduating from University last year, I have been on a mega job hunt! Like a lot of other graduates, this was harder than expected and took quite some time. However, this week I started a new job which has been pretty amazing so far, albeit stressful. My Fiance is also starting a new job tomorrow so it is good news all round.

Had a few to many cocktails: As my Fiance is starting a new job tomorrow, he had a arrange a leaving do in Manchester. I also used to work at the same place so I knew a lot of the people going and it was so nice to see some old friends. The cocktails were flowing and I woke up this morning feeling slightly delicate, and cringing at some of the photos.

Fell off the wagon: I've been trying to get fit and healthy in preparation for our wedding and to make a concious effort to drastically change my lifestyle. It's been a rather social week, which has meant meals out and drinks after, which we all know is not good for the diet! Determined to get back on it this week!

Resisted Boots 3 for 2: Whattt I hear you cry? I have to say I'm pretty pleased with myself. I walked all around Boots swatching and lusting, creating a mental shopping list too. However, I have decided to wait until I get paid and then treat myself to a few a lot of new items.

So that was my seek. I've really enjoyed writing this post as it has made a nice change. What have you all been up to this week?

Retro Makeup: 1920's Flapper Girl

At the weekend, whilst watching my current favourite TV show, Mr Selfridge, I had a little bit of a brainwave. I was thinking about my blog name and how I should have really put more thought into it when I first started. All the while, I was admiring the pretty makeup on the ladies in Mr.S and I came up with a new series. In honour of my blogs name, each week I am going to do a makup look based on different decades. I have always had a love of retro/vintage things so I'm really excited to be doing this series.

To kick things off, I have started with a 1920's Flapper Girl makeup. Before I started  did a little research into the sort of makeup that was worn in the 20's and it was quite interesting to say the least. I loved finding out about the brands that were around then and are still around now and the products that they had on the market. In fact, I really enjoyed reading about it all so I'm probably going to do a separate post on it all, to save this one from being really long. On to the make up look...

From the pictures that I saw and from the TV shows that I watched, this was the look I came up with. one thing I did notice was how bold the shades were, that were used, especially for a time when a females rights were not a high priority. The dark eyes and very red lips were what I really wanted to capture, along with the porcelain skin, something very different to my everyday look.
Products used:
Rimmel Match Perfect in 103 True Ivory. This is a few shades lighter than my normal foundation, so it worked well.
MAC Coquette Eyeshadow for my brows.
Sleek Au Naturel Palette. Shades Toast, Regal and Noir.
Urban Decay Zero 24/7 Liner
MAC Opulash Mascara
MUA Creme Blush in Dolly
MAC Russian Red Lipstick
NYX Clear Gloss

I had so much fun doing this and really like the way it came out. I can't wait to do the other looks for this series!

The Wedding Series #2: Starting The Venue Hunting

I'm really enjoying writing up these wedding planning posts and always get really excited when it comes round to writing my next one. So for this post I thought that I would share my thoughts on finding a venue for the big day.

So far we haven't been to view any venues yet (as soon as we have, I plan to write a post about it) but we have been looking at them online. Let me tell you, it's bloody difficult! For one, we had a bit of a dilemma about knowing where in the country we wanted to have our wedding. As I'm originally from Leeds, Olly is originally from Kent and we live in Manchester. Eventually we settled on going back to Leeds to get married, so that I could go to our wedding from my parents home. Obviously being from that area, I had a rough idea of some places that I wanted to go visit. However, I did want to find a few more and get a bit more of an idea of different places, and possibly find a few alternative ideas.

Firs thing I did was use the trusty old friend that is Google. I searched for "Wedding Venues in Leeds" which to be honest didn't bring up as many results as I was expecting. There were a lot of websites that showed the top 10 venues or the most recommended but nothing really stood out to me. I had a couple of ideas so I decided that going direct to the venues website would be the best idea. This is where I felt like we were finally getting somewhere. The venues that we looked at all had wedding brochures showcasing their facilities and some of them can send them to you in the post. It was great to finally see some prices and some of the packages that were on offer from prospective venues, meaning we are starting to have a bit more of an idea of how things worked. We have realised, that it's always best to see it in person before making a judgement online, as it's just not worth being disappointed about the biggest day of your life.

So far it's still very much in the planning process but we do have slightly more of an idea of the type of venue we want, and how many people will need to be catered for. Hopefully, things are taking a step in the right direction! Do you have any venue hunting tips?

10 Lip Picks for Spring

Now that March has well and truly graced us with its presence, I've been getting rid of the dark shades of winter and bringing out the bright and pastel ones, ready for spring. I've mentioned before that Spring is my favourite season for a lo of reasons, but especially the makeup.
One of my favourite ways to wear my makeup throughout spring is really simple eyes and statement lips. Lip products are my weakness, so given the opportunity to wear bright or in an in yer'face shade, then I will. Spring is certainly no exception to this rule. I thought I would share with you my 10 favourites to wear this season.

First up is Rimmel Kate Moss 101 which is a lovely soft pink that makes a statement without being too loud. It's by far my faveourite pink lipstick.
The second one is the Revlon Lipgloss in Adorned. This is a very, very bright fuchsia with tiny blue and purple shimmer running through it. A very opaque gloss that is so shiny it makes my lips look almost wet.
MAC's All Fired Up is going to be my most warn shade this year. It's a cross between a true red and a bright pink which really packs a punch. Being a retro matte formula it has incredible lasting power too.
Another MAC offering in the shade of Impassioned. A bright pink shade that looks lovely with bronzed skin.
Next up is MUA's Velvet Lip Lacquer in Funk. A gorgeous muted pink that is extremely bold, whilst still being wearable.

The Revlon Lip Butters are just beautiful but my favourite has to be Tutti Frutti. If you're a fan of orange lips but want something a bit more day time friendly, then pick this up.
Benefits lipgloss in A-Lister is my most wearable of the bunch. A soft coral that makes lip look extremely natural and healthy. This is my pick for minimal makeup days.
No lip selection would be complete without a red. My pick is MAC's Lady Danger which is an almost neon red/orange. It looks perfect as the standout bit of makeup.
Sleek Matte Me in Fandango Purple is quite a daring shade but it reminds me of the beautiful spring flowers so it would not have been right to leave it out.
The final pick is MAC's Morange. The best orange lipstick on the market which makes the loudest statement of any lipstick I own. I love to wear this with bright skin and simple eyes.

So there are my lip picks for spring. I feels so nice to be wearing colour again after the darks of winter which although I love, they can be a little dull after time.
What are your favourite lip products for spring?

HAPPY 2ND BIRTHDAY RL!

WAHOOOOO! If you haven't guessed by my in yer' face title, then today is my blog's 2nd birthday! This really is a big deal for me because when I started I thought it would be something I did a few times and then forgot about. How wrong was I?! Blogging has become such a passion of mine and I've loved every single second of it! The #bbloggers community is so wonderful and lovely, that it feels like just one big family, and one that I'm very pleased to be a part of.

To celebrate, I will be posting a giveaway tomorrow, and I'm quite excited as I haven't hosted a giveaway for a long time!
A great big huge thankyou to all of you for reading and following, I really appreciate every single one of you! Here's to many more Blog Birthdays!

The Oscars 2014 Best Dressed: My Picks

The Oscars is undoubtedly the most coveted night of the year! The build up is so intense and the excitement about who is wearing what and who will win one those beautiful gold awards. Of course my favourite thing to see is all the beautiful dresses and dreaming of wearing them myself! So today's post is going to be a collection of my top picks from the biggest event on the Hollywood calender.

1: Lupita Nyong'o looked absolutely beautiful in a pastel blue gown that suited her perfectly. The simple cut and flow of the dress skimmed over her figure is what makes it so stand-out. The simplicity of it is what makes it so utterly stunning. If I were her, I would wear that Prada gown everyday of my life
2: Angelina Jolie can do no wrong in my eyes. She always looks chic and elegant, which makes me fall in love with her even more everytime! This Elie Saab beauty looks as though it was made especially for her as t hugs all the right places. The shade compliments her skin tone so well. I'm not jealous of her at all.
3:Jennifer Lawrence is my ultimate girl crush. Not only is she an ambassador of being real, she always looks perfect. Her orange peplum dress is so simple but the shade makes such a statement. It reminds me of one of my favourite lipsicks, MACs Morange.
4: Lady Gaga pretty much left me open mouthed. I was expecting something quirky and unwearable to the rest of us, but how wrong I was. Can we just take a moment to admire those curves? Everything from the detailing to the scarf is just perfection.
5: Kelly Osbourne got it absolutely right in my opinion. I have often slated what she has worn but this time, I find myself drooling over that beautiful dress. The elegance of the dress and the intricate gold bolero go perfectly together. If I had this figure, I would want something like this for my wedding, but I doubt my pennies would stretch that far.

So there are my top picks from this years Oscars ceremony. There were so many beautiful gowns this year that it was very hard to choose. I can only imagine that these were even more sunning in person.
What were your picks for best dressed?

Beauty Things I'm Bad At

Since starting this blog my beauty skills have come on leaps and bounds, as I'm sure most other bloggers have. However, there are still plenty of things that I'm pretty terrible at. No matter how hard I try, I just can't seem to get myself to do these things. Maybe sharing them with you all will help me get better at them. A girl can dream! So here are the beauty things I'm bad at.

1. Looking after my cuticles.
I'll keep up to them for a few weeks and then I just leave them. Then I wonder why my manicures never look nice. No mater how much my mum tells me off for not looking after them, I will never learn.

2. Self Tanning.
Those bloody streaks! Even if a formula promises to be streak free I can guarantee it will streak on me. No amount of body scrub and moisturiser will sort me out.

3. Maintaining my brows.
I have to admit, I have got better at this but I'm still not great. I love how my brows look after getting them shaped but I just cannot pluck them myself! They grow so quickly too that I need to be able to learn to do this.

4.Sticking to my cleansing routine.
I cleanse every single day, but I did get into the habit of double cleansing most days ans using a plethora of products. However, I keep forgetting that second cleanse and my skin doesn't look great for it.

5. Washing my makeup brushes.
I do this once a week too, but I should probably do it more. I never do a daily clean using a daily brush shampoo and with the ones that are available now. It would literally take me an extra two minutes.

6. Sleeping on damp hair.
I know, I know, Slap wrists! I just can't get out of this habit. I have such thick, long hair and it takes so long to dry it properly! Need. To. Stop.

7. Not wearing lipliner.
This is something that I always forget! I know it's not a major deal but I wish I could remember as when I do, my lipstick looks ten times better!

8. Drinking water.
This is something that I'm determined to get better at! I never really drink water never mind getting the recommended daily amount. When I do drink it I feel so much better so it is something that I need to make sure I do.

9. Pedicures.
I hate doing pedicures. I just find it such a chore, and a bit of a pain to be honest. I'm hoping that I can sort this out before summer comes around and the pretty shoes are a must.

10. Sharpening liners.
Again, I know that this isn't a major deal but it is something that I do a hell of a lot! I will literally wear an eyeliner down to nothing to the point where the creamiest of liners is dragging across my eye/lips. Not good! It also means that a lot of my liners go unloved because I can never be bothered to sharpen them.

So there are the beauty things I'm bad at. I'm hoping that by writing this post I will have some motivation to get my act into gear and change some of this! Maybe I will do a follow up post in a few months to see if I have improved.
What are your worst beauty habits?
